Biking to Meet My Maker!

I just about met my maker last Saturday….

Lake Almanor, CA

Right there on Lake Almanor hill!

The day was brighter than most,

The breeze cooler,

The friends friendlier,

The excitement higher,

But as it turns out, my heart was fainter.

I couldn’t blame it.  My heart had been little used last year due to the ill effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  Not to mention being heartsick.

So I didn’t complain when it demanded I get off my bike.  I dismounted until the wooziness passed.

Comrades!

When I finally rejoined my friends who were waiting at the top of the hill, they showed me the true meaning of “comrades.”

Knowing how strong cyclists like a physically challenging pace, I urged my companions on, reassuring them I would be fine, that I truly enjoy riding solo.  Besides, it was their ride, too, and they should indulge in it fully.

Then I rode ahead, expecting them to pass in a fast-wheeling peloton.

I was wrong.  They caught up and slowed to my pace, watching out for me as comrades do.

We rode 37 miles that day, each person experiencing his or her own slice of Heaven.

Heaven!

For me, I was thankful I didn’t end up meeting my maker,

but was also thankful that I did end up meeting my maker’s heart.

Even if it looked suspiciously like jersey-clad comrades!
