Cherry Yoga is Not the Pits!

Cherries have to be one of God’s sweetest creations.

If you don’t believe me, ask the birds!

They  can strip a full grown cherry tree of its only-turned-ripe-this-very-moment cherries in one sitting.

Without apology!

Now I don’t mind sharing–that is what makes life sweet.

Therefore, I take my role as teacher very seriously when it comes to teaching the birds to share.  Since I love brother and sister birds as much as St. Francis did, but am lacking his bird-sermon skills, I resort to Cherry Yoga.  That’s right, Cherry Yoga.  It may appear at first glance that Mike and I are merely stretching bird netting over the trees.  Hardly!

See that right-arm stretch? And how about that neck stretch for the ‘ole jowls?

And tree pose has a whole new look:

Of course, the birds aren’t too pleased at being netted out.  But it’s not like we don’t honor them.

Besides, we leave cherries on the trees for them when we finally de-net and pick.

That’s when we stretch our compassion muscles.

But the tastiest work-out comes from perfecting our hand-to-mouth moves.  We’ve become masters at this.

.

.

For it requires that we spit out the pits.   And if it’s one thing I have learned during the past year, it is:

you cannot let life’s pits stop you from eating the fruit!

Wild Life is Where You Find It!

There’s a code of honor followed by trail-users:

What’s shared on the trail, stays on the trail!

I know, I’m shameless, but some things are too good to pass up!

My trail mates, for example:  Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

But who can blame them for being wild?

Nature has a way of luring you deeper and deeper into her woods,

Lake Shasta, CA

coaxing you to find your own true nature in her mirror:

           Peacefulness…                                                              Perfection!
l
l
All the while reminding you that your wildness knows how to guide you safely through life as surely as a killdeer protects her unborn.

If you haven’t looked into nature’s mirror today, I would encourage you to do so and report back to me .
Tell me if you agree that Wild life is where you find it!

The Upside to Going Downhill

All downhill from here!

Riding my bicycle to the small community of Big Bend would be 17 miles of

free-wheeling,

heart-thumping,

Yee-hawing downhill.

Or so I thought!

The first uphill wasn’t too bad.  Neither was the second, third, fourth and however many more hills I climbed.  Somewhere along the way I lost count.

Joy!

Isn’t that just like life?  We’re on a glorious ride, thinking everything is free-wheeling, heart-thumping, Yee-hawing, and we pedal smack dab into a hill.  We can’t turn around and go back to easy again, because now there’s another hill.  We either go up or give up!

I’ve come to discover that it doesn’t matter how we make it up that hill.  We can attack it with all our might, pedal slowly, walk our bikes or hitch a ride.  What does matter is that we keep climbing.

Gayle!

My advice to achieve that goal is to surround yourself with fellow riders who support you, even when you snivel, whine or complain that your legs are burning.  Because when they are happy to ride with you anyway, you seem to rise to the occasion.  That’s when uphill becomes a

free-wheeling,

heart-thumping,

Yee-hawing downhill adventure.

Besides, you never know what rewards you will find at the end of the trail.

Mike & Joy!

Reward at the end of the trail

How does sitting in a natural hot springs cooled by river water sound?  If you like the idea, maybe next time you will join us.

CAT Scan the Old Fashioned Way

June is already time for my next cancer check-up.

I like to think of it as cancer-free check-up.  I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed. Personally, I prefer old fashioned CAT scans, don’t you?

Boys Will Be Boys!

Some boys never grow up!

Thank God I’m married to one.

Thank God my friend Pamela is too,

for these two boys provided more of a show last Sunday than did the Annular Solar Eclipse.

Well, almost.

Lil’ Michael                    Lil’ Ron

It started at 5:30 p.m. when Ron got out of his car lugging a long, rectangular box made of the gridded cardboard that a seamstress uses to mark and cut patterns.

“What is that?” I asked.

“It’s my viewing box,” he said with glee, rushing to find an unobstructed view of the sun.

“Looks to me like Pamela’s former pattern cutting board,” I pointed out with a wink at Pamela.

About that time, Mike came around the corner, beaming.  He, too, carried a cardboard box, only this one had a long tube taped to it.

“What is that?” I stupidly asked again.

“It’s my viewing box,” he said with glee, rushing to find an unobstructed view of the sun.

Pamela and I looked at each other and grinned.

It was about then that Gary, our good friend from Sacramento, joined us.  He had driven to Redding to watch the moon eclipsing the sun, as it could only be seen “spot on” within a 50-mile wide swath, and our place was right in the middle.

Gary is no stranger to playing hard.  He once enticed us to build an igloo while snowshoeing to Chaos Crags in Mt. Lassen National Park. So, when he saw Mike and Ron comparing who had the bigger box, :-), he joined right in.

After inspecting, admiring, comparing, boasting, discussing and reveling, the boys declared both view boxes to be red-hot.

That’s when Gary, who is at the techo-savvy-comes-easily stage, pulled out his viewing tool:

                                                       Sun shades.

                                                          Touche!

For the next hour, the five of us watched the moon dance with the sun,

Celestial bodies waltzing across the sky.

After the heavenly show was over, we waltzed to the dining room singing the words, “I fell into a burning ring of fire….”  (These were the only words we remembered!)

But we did remember to play, however, toasting the sun, the moon, each other–and you.  For I love having you drop in for a visit and joining us in a sip of the The Sweet Life!

Biking to Meet My Maker!

I just about met my maker last Saturday….

Lake Almanor, CA

Right there on Lake Almanor hill!

The day was brighter than most,

The breeze cooler,

The friends friendlier,

The excitement higher,

But as it turns out, my heart was fainter.

I couldn’t blame it.  My heart had been little used last year due to the ill effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  Not to mention being heartsick.

So I didn’t complain when it demanded I get off my bike.  I dismounted until the wooziness passed.

Comrades!

When I finally rejoined my friends who were waiting at the top of the hill, they showed me the true meaning of “comrades.”

Knowing how strong cyclists like a physically challenging pace, I urged my companions on, reassuring them I would be fine, that I truly enjoy riding solo.  Besides, it was their ride, too, and they should indulge in it fully.

Then I rode ahead, expecting them to pass in a fast-wheeling peloton.

I was wrong.  They caught up and slowed to my pace, watching out for me as comrades do.

Mt. Lassen "peaking"

Michael smiling

We rode 37 miles that day, each person experiencing his or her own slice of Heaven.

Gayle smiling

Heaven!

For me, I was thankful I didn’t end up meeting my maker,

but was also thankful that I did end up meeting my maker’s heart.

Even if it looked suspiciously like jersey-clad comrades!

Mother’s Day!

Could you love this face?

Love it so much that you shout to the world,

“This is the most beautiful face ever!”

 and mean it?

 A Mother could

 if it were her child.

 Even if it were not.

For mothers know love.

They know how to feel another’s heart,

To fill that heart

With love.

This Mother’s Day,

as you contemplate what gift

to give your mother,

If you are blessed to still have her,

Or if she is in God’s hands now,

Know that the gift has already been given

By you, to you, the moment you were born.

It is in your heart.

And hers.

Forever.

I love you, Mom

The Clothes Whisperers….

whisper, whisper, whisper

Hanging out laundry is one of life’s sweetest pleasures.  Honest!
That’s because laundry never lies.
Take that blue nightshirt on the left, for example.
It whispers, “You look beautiful today,”
echoing the words my husband had spoken the morning I wore it
for the first time in over a year.
And how about those bike jerseys?
You may hear the words gaudy polyester, but I hear,
“Go, Biker Chick, Go!”

Diane & Gayle:  Biker Chicks

And the long-sleeved gray shirt on the end.
I wore that to two memorial services.
It speaks to me of the greatness of Vince D’Amato,
a well-loved man,
who died recently of pancreatic cancer.
His was diagnosed after mine, but God had other plans for him.
For his wife, Jacque, too, may she find strength.

The other service was for Ruth Shaw,
my former mother-in-law.

I love her.  I always will.
The lacy sleeves murmur that
God has reclaimed an angel in Heaven.
But I know we have lost one on Earth.
And don’t forget that yellow-and-white checkered tablecloth
hanging on the back line.
It mentions the pleasure I had while my Nevada friends
Laurian and Ken sat at the table eating lunch with us.
Their vacation to the coast was extremely limited,
but they made time for me!
All of this chatter has worn me out, however,
as I tend to be a quiet woman.

At home in New Zealand!

So I will say good-bye to the doe who is quietly eavesdropping,

Deer me, an eavesdropper!
Getting a “deer” full!
and say good-bye to you, too.

For it is time to go inside and clean out my clothes closet,

discarding clothes that no longer “suit” me.
My criteria for what to keep?
I simply listen,
and let the whispers guide me.
They always do!

I Saw Santa’s Bloomers

                     Santa appeared in bloomers today.

                      Red and white

                                                     Tulip bloom-ers.

Someone sent him to my house Christmas Eve,
                     with a bundle of bulbs
                          ready to plant.

                     Bless that someone!

And if you are the one who sent Santa to me                                                    bearing bloomers,
Please know how much I loved it!

For I was in need of magic,

childlike innocence
and gleeful surprises.

I still am, aren’t you?

But let’s not wait for Christmas.
Let’s plant our magic today.
And every day.
You and me.
And Santa!
